came to an end in 1958, the general consensus among the elective parties in the United Colony of Trinidad and Tobago, which was already internally
self-governing, was to opt for eventual independence. Independence came on 31 August 1962. The government at the time of independence was based on the
parliamentary model, with an appointive Senate and a House of Representatives elected under universal adult suffrage; with the Queen as Head of State. In
1976 the islands became the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, with a president elected by the combined membership of the Senate and House of
Representatives.)
