(Upon the demise of the Federation of the West Indies, of which it was a unit, St. Lucia reverted to the status of a separate colony. On 1 March 1967 it began a 12-year period as an associated state of the United Kingdom. It achieved independence as a constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth, with the British Queen as head of state. Its independence constitution called for a House of Assembly, with members elected under universal adult suffrage, and an appointive Senate.)
