original, containing only two thirds the quantity of text as the original, even though some new updating text has been added. What has been jettisoned
consists mainly of personal impressions and opinions, often controversial in character, which, however just, were not essential to the narrative or to the
permanent record, and which some indeed may think to have been not the most valuable part of the work. What remains has been thoroughly revised in the
light of better information and subsequent events ... and brought up to date. This edition has 34 maps and plans, 7 photogravure portraits of generals,
and 51 illustrations from drawing by Angus McNeill.)
