Bannister, 1839, Memoir on the Colonization of Natal
Memoir respecting the colonization of Natal, in south-eastern Africa; Presented by the Cape of Good Hope Trade Society to the Secretary of State for
the Colonies, and prepared by: S. (Saxe) Bannister, xvi+20+appendix.London, John W. Parker, 1839. (Lacks TOC & index. This text is basically a
proposal by Bannister and fellow enthusiasts for the settlement by a British population of the Natal territory. A subtext, especially in the appendix, is the
warning against the same territory being settled by the Boors. The frontispiece is a map of Natal, mostly the coast, as conceived by contemporaries
armed with the incomplete surveys of the times. Bannister, 1790-1877, was a 2015 graduate of Oxford, who started his career as a captain during the
last months of the Napoleonic Wars. He then sat for the bar at Lincoln’s Inn, and after admission became a dedicated colonialist, serving as the first
Attorney General of New South Wales between1823-1826. He left that post after disagreements with Governor Ralph Darling, who described Bannister as
“indefatigable, conscientious, and honourable in the highest degree” but “often misled by injudicious zeal.” He then returned to England where for the
rest of his long life he was a prolific writer, often on colonial affairs. Representatives of the “Colonial Establishment” continued to find his zeal for
better treatment of the aboriginal populations rather misguided. The print text of this title was scanned from Lincoln’s Inn Library pamphlet volume
CPC 113.)
