Description and Holding Information
1652-1906 Compiled Laws, Chron. Ed., 5v.& Index.
Statutes of the Cape of Good Hope, 1652–1895, Vols. 1–3, Cape Town, Juta, 1895; Plus Index for Vols. 1–3, 189p,, same publ., 1897; Plus Supplementary
Vols. 4 & 5, covering the periods 1896–1900 and 1902–1906 respectively, each with its own index, Cape Town, Cape Times Ltd., GovPr, 1904 and 1906.
(The pagination of all five main volumes of this set is continuous. The first three volumes were published under authority of the Supreme Court of the
Colony of the Cape of Good Hope. Vol 4 was published under authority of the Colonial Secretary's Department, while Vol. 5 was published “By authority.”
The Index Volume covers the years 1652-1897. The supplements have their own index. This compilation was dubbed “The Chronological Edition,”
because, in contrast to earlier practice, in this revision the statutes still in force are listed chronologically rather than in a subject arrangement. As
explained in the preamble to Act 5 of 1902 {Vol. 5, p. 4357}, no parliamentary session was held in the year 1901 due to the imposition of martial law
throughout Cape Town Province during the Boer War.)
