1954-, Lagos Law Reports

|
Lagos law reports (name varies): 1954-, Nigeria, Govt Printer, 1954-. (Each vol. has a TOC & Index. In 1954 an appellate “Federal Supreme Court” was established for the then “Colony of Nigeria,” with a trial level “High Court” being established for each of Nigeria’s then components: The Eastern Region, the Western Region, the Northern Region, the Protectorate of the Cameroons, and the newly constituted Federal Territory of Lagos. Before 1954 the “Colony of Lagos” had had a long independent colonial history and boasted a “Supreme Court” of its own, with both trial level and appellate jurisdictions. Thus, the “High Court” established for the Federal Territory of Lagos was a substantially different judicial animal than its predecessors. The reports of its decisions therefore became a new series, with the initial title: “Law Reports of the High Court of the Federal Territory of Lagos.” In 1976 the very small “Federal Territory of Lagos” had both its land area and its status changed when it became one of the 12 new “states” into which Nigeria was organized. However, despite this enlargement of the land area over which it held jurisdiction, the “High Court of Lagos” still retained its essential juridical character; i.e., as a trial level court whose decisions were subject to review by a federal “Supreme Court.” Given that fact, the report series covering the court continues from 1954 to the present date. As of Feb. 2013, LLMC’s run of the series covered only the years 1957-67. Assistance in filling out this run by the loan or gift or volumes for scanning would be greatly appreciated.)
