1911, Commercial Code (Hang)
The commercial code of Japan: by Yang Yin Hang, xxiii+319p, Boston, The Boston Book Co., 1911. (A first attempt at a Japanese commercial code under
governmental sponsorship by a German named Reusler was made in the 1880s, culminating in the promulgation of a full code in 1898. This first code, an
amalgam of the German and French models, was quickly judged to be inadequate to Japanese requirements. Therefore a revision effort was soon undertaken,
with the result that a revised code, based much more closely on the German model, was promulgated in 1899. The author of this translation and
commentary was a law graduate of the Waseda University who went on to earn a master’s degree in law at the University of Pennsylvania. His work was greatly
assisted by the faculty at Penn., and his commentary is specifically aimed at making clear the meaning of the code to an American reading public.)
