|
The civil code of Japan: transla. by John H. Gubbins, Vol. 1-2, Tokyo/Yokohama, Maruya & Co./Kelly & Walsh, 1897-99. (The Civil Code of Japan was principally based upon the German model. The code was adopted by the Japanese Diet in piecemeal fashion during the years 1896-1898, which explains why Gubbins’ work was issuedin two parts in 1897 and 1899. The complete code was promulgated on 15 June 1898 and came into full operation on 16 July of that year. Gubbins, whose work provides an English translation with the original Japanese version appearing in the outer margins, was Second Secretary and Japanese Secretary to the British Legation in Japan. For a comparative and contemporary translation, see Japan, Civil Code, 1898 (Lönholm), also offered on this site.)
