1872, Indian Evidence Act, Stephen
The Indian Evidence Act (I. of 1872); With an introduction on the principles of judicial evidence: by James Fitzjames Stephen (1829-94), xi+232p,
London, Macmillan & Co., 1872. (A table of contents starts on p. ix; an index on p. 217. This text comprised a total revision of the code of evidence for
British India. It was so highly regarded that Lord Coleridge, then the English Attorney-General, asked Sir Stephen to draft an English Code of
Evidence based upon the Indian model. That draft act was prepared for the English parliament in 1972-73, but never passed. However, the English draft act
became the “First Edition” of Stephen’s highly successful Digest of the Law of Evidence, several editions of which are offered on this site.)
