Raymond, 1791, Anti-black prejudice in white settlers
(There is no
index or table of contents. The original of this text was filmed by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library
in its Series II, South Atlantic and the Caribbean, Reel #42. Raymond was an educated and wealthy mullato, resident in France since 1784. In the years
that followed his arrival he published a number of pamphlets tracing the troubles in Saint-Domingue to the cruelties and prejudice of the colons, and
advocating citizenship for mullatoes. He was personally well informed, although his writings suffer from his own prejuice against the blacks. In this
text Raymond contends that race prejusidce arose in the colonies in the years after 1763, replacing a more benign regime prevailing theretofore.)
