The coffee planter of Saint Domingo; With an appendix containing a view of the constitution, government, laws, and state of that colony, previous to the year 1789; To which are added, some hints on the present state of the island, under the British government: by P.J. Laborie, xii, 193, 145 p, London : T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1798. (The text covered in the first series of Arabic pagination, table of contents at p. 7, is an almost clinically dispassionate treatise on the practicalities of running a coffee plantation, including managing the “staff,” in which the typical slave is described as an “animal rational in a middle degree.” The second series of Arabic pagination, table of contents follows p. 145, contains the constitutional, etc., appendix described in the title. The entire text is in English. The original of this text was filmed by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library in its Series II, South Atlantic and the Caribbean, Reel #42.)
