|
|
Republique française; André Rigaud general de brigade commandant en chef l’armée de Sud de Saint Domingue; Proclamation n.a., 1 sheet broaqside, n.p., n.d. (The document is signed by Rigaud and dated 7 Fructidor 25; i.e., 11 Sept., 1799. This image was digitized by LLMC from the University of Florida Library’s microfilm Saint Domingue Collection. Rigaud was a leader of the mullato forces serving under Toussaint Louverture (T-L). He eventually fell out with T-L, and this broadside was issued in Rigaud’s attempt to raise forces from among the anciens libres; i.e., the pre-revolutionary “people of color.” Putting down this rebellion was one of the major obstacles facing T-L in his drive to unite the entire colony. Although he was finally defeated, Rigaud was able to escape San Domingue with his family to France, where he kept up the resistance to T-L among the colony’s exiled anciens libres.)
