described in the title, the first main part of the book, pp. 39-118, is devoted to the colonial regime in Saint-Domingue prior to the revolutionary
period. The section describing its history from the start of the revolutionary period, 1789, to the time of publication, 1795, begins on p. 119. Very
recent developments are covered in a supplement, p. 344, and a postscript, p. 373. A table of contents is provided on pp. 381-388. The LLMC copy of the
