1970, Fiji Constitutional Conference, Report
Report of the Fiji Constitutional Conference, 1970: n.a., 67p, Cmnd. 4389, London, HMSO, (1965). (The conference was held in London at Marlborough
House from 20 April to 5 May, 1970. This constitutional conference provided for recommended a bicameral legislature consisting of a House of
Representative of 52 members {22 native Fijians, 22 ethnic Indians, and 8 Europeans and others}. These members were to be elected partly on a communal basis and
partly on a common roll. Provision was also made for a nominated Senate of 22 members. The Great Council of Chiefs, which by then had evolved into an
elective body and included many commoners, was retained. Its role was to debate matters relevant to indigenous Fijians and to make recommendations to
the government. It also was given the right to nominate eight members to the Senate. On 10 October 1970, under this new constitution, Fiji became an
independent nation within the Commonwealth, with the British monarch serving as head of state.)
